Other Activities (Not Caving)

Non-Caving Outdoor Options:
Not caving? Try one or two of these local attractions:

  1. Visit the Sequoia National Park Foothills Visitors Center. This is located just a couple of miles from the Park entrance which is located east of Three Rivers on Sierra Drive (which turns into the General’s Highway that continues on through the Park over to Kings Canyon National Park. Here you can learn about the park and find out about other places to check out. The Park entrance fee is $35.00 per car, and Saturday is a fee-free for National Public Lands Day!
  2. There's plenty of sight-seeing and scenic hiking within an hour or so of Three Rivers: just search your favorite online map. The locals recommend numerous trailheads and places you can stop to see giant sequoia trees and scenic vistas:

Stretch your legs on one of the Park's many wonderful day hikes, like the very spectacular hike to the top of Moro Rock, the mellow Big Trees loop (on a boardwalk), the General Sherman grove, Tokapah Falls, and Cresent Meadow, to name a few.

Or check out Buck Rock Fire Lookout in Sequoia National Forest.

Or why not enjoy some high alpine terrain at Mineral King?

  3. Want some easy caving? Visit Boyden Cavern in Kings Canyon (just out the National Park). Follow the Generals Highway north out of Sequoia National Park and into Sequoia National Forest. It is right along Highway 180. It is approximately 15 miles past the turnoff to Fresno. The manager of the cave has generously offered Regional attendees 40% off the regular admission price if you use the code NSSWR25. This price will be available from Sept. 25 (Thurs.) through Sept. 29 (Sun.) They would also be happy to coordinate a WR group tour (limit of 28) which leave every half hour. Check in at Regional registration to see if you can join in a group visit.

  4. Other technical caving-adjacent pursuits await.
Moro Rock and Danland nearby offer technical rock climbing (you might find Noah Cooke in camp to discuss).
Several grear canyoneering trips on the East Fork, Middle Fork, or Marble Fork of the Kaweah River are near camp, with a dozen routes within an hour's drive. John Bowling, Regional co-chair, is familiar with many of these routes and will be around camp all day Saturday.
